Review of At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House by H.R. McMaster

When I first picked up At War with Ourselves, I was intrigued by H.R. McMaster’s storied career and the allure of firsthand accounts from such a polarizing chapter in American history. The blend of military insight and political upheaval promised a riveting read. However, what I discovered was a mix of thought-provoking reflections and a rather disappointing departure from the depth I had expected.

McMaster, who served as National Security Advisor under President Trump, lays bare the chaotic foreign policy landscape of his tenure. From the start, he invokes the shadow of Henry Kissinger—an apparent benchmark against which McMaster attempts to measure his own experiences. Yet, this ambition is where the book falters. While Kissinger’s memoirs offer a rich tapestry of strategic deliberation and introspection, McMaster’s narrative is, at times, a frustratingly one-dimensional recounting of conflicts with key figures like Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. Instead of illuminating his own policies with substantive analysis, McMaster seems to adopt a “white knight” stance, positioning himself against perceived enemies, which ultimately detracts from the greater complexities at play.

One striking section details a Zoom call with Kissinger where McMaster reflects on his choices amidst a toxic atmosphere. His struggle to navigate the minefield of office politics is palpable, yet I couldn’t help but feel that he missed Kissinger’s deeper wisdom about accountability and collaboration. In an environment so rife with discord, it’s disappointing that McMaster often chooses to assign blame rather than introspect on his own role in the inevitable outcome of his tenure.

The book pulsates with commentary on Trump’s foreign policy, characterized by McMaster’s ambivalence; he recognizes some effectiveness but is candid about Trump’s vulnerabilities, especially regarding figures like Vladimir Putin. McMaster’s assertion that the Russian leader manipulated Trump resonates, yet his understanding of NATO and its historical purpose reflects a rather simplistic view that leaves much to be desired. His comparisons of Trump to Lyndon B. Johnson, though, fall flat, revealing a misunderstanding of both leaders’ fundamentally different approaches to governance.

In terms of writing style, McMaster adopts a straightforward narrative that keeps the reader engaged, but it often lacks the nuance and depth expected from someone with his background. Key quotations, such as his assertion about the psychological manipulation employed by the Russians, punctuate his arguments, yet they also highlight his struggle to connect the dots in a cohesive manner.

Despite my myriad critiques, I’m glad to have navigated through At War with Ourselves. It serves as an important reflection of one man’s experience during a tumultuous political period, though it often feels shallow when compared to the legacies of its predecessors. Those interested in political memoirs or the intricacies of the Trump administration may find value in McMaster’s perspective, but it is unlikely to resonate deeply with readers seeking substantive strategic insight.

Ultimately, reading this book sparked much reflection on the nature of leadership and accountability. It reminded me that every narrative is colored by its author’s experiences and biases. Going forward, I wonder how this account will influence our understanding of modern political dynamics—and whether McMaster’s voice will find a home in the future political discourse he so passionately critiques.
